Working Solutions: Internet Presence for Non-Profit Organization

Abstract

In 1990, then U.S. Representative Bill Nelson (FL) and several Congressional leaders started the first annual National Student Leadership Forum with the vision of encouraging, challenging and inspiring this select group of young leaders.  Then Vice-President Dan Quayle, U.S. Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM), U.S. Representative Jim Slattery (D-KS) and then Missouri governor John Ashcroft convened a group of university student leaders who were politically, culturally and religiously diverse.

Then, in 1992, U.S. Representative Bill Nelson (FL) and his wife Grace hosted the inaugural Florida Student Leadership Forum (FLSLF).  Today, more than two decades after the first forum was held, the organization continues to encourage Florida’s future leaders toward growth and maturity.

The Challenge

Throughout years of dramatic growth and a forecast for continued expanding membership, logistical challenges ensued on marketing and forum registration.  The organization did not have an electronic registration system, and was using paper registration forms that were mailed and had to be compiled manually.  Staff hand-typed all paper registration forms into an spreadsheet, causing even more time for processing.

The Solution

In 2011, Michael Turner was hired to develop an Internet presence and online registration system for the blossoming FLSLF organization.  The client requested a simple, yet powerful Website able to meet the forum’s expanding needs.  The Turner Network developed and hosts the forum Website using WordPress coupled with a graphical user-level, yet full-functioning database capable of meeting all of the forum’s registration logistics.
